Steinway Sets the Stage

The reputation of Steinway & Sons as an internationally acclaimed piano manufacturer has much to do with the sheer presence of Steinway pianos in the the important facets of piano music: world-class concert halls, reputable piano competitions, and illustrious music institutions.

Wherever you go - from New York’s Carnegie Hall, to Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, to Vienna’s Concertgebouw - you would hardly be surprised to find Steinway concert grand pianos on their stages. This could have much to do with the fact that pianists performing with the world’s major symphonies overwhelmingly choose Steinway & Sons, a rating that has never accounted for less than 95% in the last decade.  In the most recent 2018 – 2019 symphony survey, 97.8% of pianists when performing with orchestra, chose Steinway.

Sharing the concert stage with accomplished pianists, are the next generation of piano virtuosos competing in the world’s most prestigious piano competition. Year after year, in events such as the International Chopin Piano Competition, Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and the International Tchaikovsky Competition, the winners almost always select Steinway & Sons as their instrument of choice. Each of these wins proves once again that when the world’s best pianists perform on the world’s finest pianos, something extraordinary happens.

The recognition of Steinway as the premier piano manufacturer is most evidenced by All-Steinway schools such as the Curtis Institute of Music and China Conservatory of Music, where the only pianos used from practice room to recital hall are designed by Steinway & Sons. The Julliard School famously known for one of the world’s largest inventories of Steinway piano, owns 248 Steinways out of their approximately 260 pianos. Dr Kaplinsky, chair of Julliard’s piano department quotes: “Having an excellent piano in the practice room is inspiring. Inferior pianos lead to frustrations which limited their growth”.

Committed to crafting pianos for over 165 years, Steinway & Sons remains dedicated to providing current and future generations of pianists with the best piano possible.
