Manufacturing

From generation to generation, every STEINWAY has been carefully handcrafted utilizing the finest materials and building techniques.

STEINWAY selects only the highest quality woods, allowing them to dry naturally for a period of more than 2 years, before putting them through a 12 months manufacturing process, allowing all its grand and upright pianos to achieve the best acoustic qualities.

Skilled craftsmen build the piano from outside in, starting from the rim bending process. About 17 laminates of Hard Rock Maple and Mahogany are bended together to create the iconic curved shape, with both outer and inter rim bended at the same time to achieve a single continuous rim constructed for ultimate strength and durability.

Often referred to as the heart or the soul of the piano, Steinway’s patented diaphragmatic soundboard is crafted from solid Sitka Spruce; tapered in thickness from the center to the edges to allow vibrations to travel freely. A vertically laminated maple bridge is then manually nailed onto the soundboard to ensure perfect transmission of sound.

One of the most important components keeping the entire piano together is the cast iron plate, which STEINWAY & SONS manufactures in its own O.S. Kelly Iron Foundry in Ohio. Upon this plate sits almost 20 tonnes of pressure from the over 230 individually hands strung piano strings that are made in-house at the Hamburg Factory.

Finally, the key action which combines both Kluge Piano Keys and Renner Piano Actions, both companies wholly owned by STEINWAY & SONS, is fitted into the piano.
